Retrato del Dr. Alan Kleiman Zisman, cirujano general
“The best operation is the one that is correctly indicated.”
About me

I amDr. Alan Kleiman Zisman.

I am a surgeon specialising in General Surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopy.

I studied Medicine at Universidad Anáhuac and my specialty in General Surgery at UNAM. I taught Introduction to Surgery at Universidad Westhill, and today I practise at Hospital Angeles Lomas and Hospital Español de México, in Mexico City.

I grew up in a household where medicine was part of everyday life, and I came to know the world of surgery as a child through my father. In time, that familiarity became a vocation: I chose surgery because it brings together medical knowledge, technical skill, decision-making and, above all, the chance to help patients in a tangible way.

The story

How I cameto general surgery.

My path into medicine began very early. I grew up in a household where medicine was part of everyday life, and as a child I had the chance to discover the world of surgery through my father. Over time, what began as familiarity with medicine turned into a genuine vocation.

I chose surgery because it brings together medical knowledge, technical skill, decision-making and, above all, the chance to help patients in a tangible way. My training as a doctor and later as a specialist in General Surgery led me to develop a particular interest in gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

“The best operation is the one that is correctly indicated, performed with the appropriate technique and under the safest possible conditions for the patient.”

I studied Medicine at Universidad Anáhuac and my specialty in General Surgery at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), with board certification from the Mexican Board of General Surgery (Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General, A.C.). Throughout my career I have sought to keep a practice grounded in scientific evidence and continuous medical education.

For me, operating does not only mean carrying out a technically correct procedure: it means understanding the person in front of me, determining whether they genuinely need surgery, and clearly explaining the alternatives available. I taught Introduction to Surgery at Universidad Westhill (2021–2024), an experience that strengthened my commitment to explaining every clinical decision clearly.

How I care

My philosophyof practice.

Four principles that guide every consultation and every operation.

01

Diagnosis before surgery

Not every complaint needs an operation. Before proposing surgery, I make sure I have a clear diagnosis with the necessary investigations, and I explain the alternatives where they exist.

02

Minimal invasion where possible

Laparoscopy reduces pain, scarring and recovery time. I use it whenever the case allows, without compromising the safety of the procedure.

03

Clear communication with the patient

I explain the diagnosis, the treatment options and what each operation involves in plain language, without unnecessary jargon.

04

Follow-up until discharge

My responsibility does not end when I leave the operating theatre. I follow up every patient until a full recovery is confirmed.

A littleabout me.

01

Why did you choose General Surgery?

Because it brings together medical knowledge, technical skill and decision-making, and above all it lets you help the patient in a tangible way.

02

What is your approach to care?

Not every patient needs surgery, and not every condition calls for the same approach. The decision is made after a full medical assessment, always weighing the patient’s safety and keeping communication clear and honest.

03

What do you do when you are not working?

I am passionate about music, particularly The Beatles, and I follow the NFL: American football is a sport I played at school and one I still have a special relationship with.

04

What would you like a patient to remember about you?

That they were listened to, that they clearly understood their options, and that the decision we made together was the safest one for them.
